Advice For My Son: Practical
It occurred to me that I haven’t done one these since my son has been born. You can chalk that up to the lack of time…or my son is just so awesome he doesn’t need advice from his old man. While the latter is true, as well as the former, I’m going drop some wisdom anyway. You know, make the old man feel like he’s still got something to teach.
- Always expect the Spanish Inquisition - Because nobody else does.
- Always root for the underdog - Because it’s so much more fun when they win.
- Measure three times, cut once - Because you can’t always trust the second measurement.
- Carry a pen - Don’t be that guy who scrambles for a pen with the worried whisper to the next person, “Hey, do you have a pen I can borrow?”
- Don’t underestimate the importance of a handshake - The handshake seems to be a lost art and I can only hope it makes a return as you grow up. But lost art or not, a solid firm handshake with eye contact will make others notice you. Years ago, I taught your mother about the Art of the Handshake, and now she’s shakes hands like a boss.
- Once in your life, grow a mustache - You pick the style, wear it proudly…then shave it.
- Open doors for women - It’s an outdated notion, but I was taught to always open doors for women and it stuck with me. A word of caution, most women won’t notice, but appreciate the gratitude from those who do. As of this writing, your mother and I have been together for 11 years and I still open doors for her.
- Don’t believe the hype - It’ll die down and reality will set in, believe that.
- Not all who wander are lost - Following a straight path is great to get where you to need to be, but don’t afraid to explore.
- Bad decisions make great stories - Just make sure those stories end with, “But everything turned out OK in the end.”
